In early May 2007, Queensland Corrective Services launched a pilot water tank manufacturing project at Woodford Correctional Centre (WCC).
The workshop will be a new addition to WCC's industry workshops and will be a partnership between QCS and a private sector company.
The number of tank manufacturers around the State has increased from about 12 to 21 during the past nine months, however there is still a significant shortfall between demand and supply.
The pilot program is expected to manufacture up to 50 water tanks a week in two sizes - 3000 litres and 5000 litres.
QCS expects to have the tender prepared and out for consideration by June and by ready for full production by November.

Queensland prison industries currently provides employment opportunities for about 1200 prisoners in commercial industries across high and low security correctional centres.
This equates to about 30 per cent of the eligible prison population.
This provides a unique opportunity to develop training and work skills as well as producing a valuable product for the community.
Water tank production will enable Woodford's prison industries to operate seven days-a-week with morning and afternoon shifts. This new industry is expected to mean employment for 70 to 100 prisoners per day.
The industry may be expanded to the Maryborough, Borrallon and Darling Downs correctional centres.
