The Gatton Shire was identified as a preferred location for a new correctional precinct by the Queensland Government in November 2006. Following the identification of a suitable site the Department of Natural Resources, on behalf of Queensland Corrective Services, began negotiations with landowners.
The precinct will be similar to the existing precinct at Wacol, Brisbane, which has Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre with accommodation for 890; Brisbane Correctional Centre (formerly Sir David Longland Correctional Centre and currently closed for refurbishment, reopening in early 2008) with a capacity of 540; Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre with a capacity of 258; and Wolston Correctional Centre with a capacity of 600.
In October 2005, south-east Queensland councils were invited to submit Expressions of Interest for the project. QCS subsequently provided further information to councils on their request.
The Gatton Correctional Precinct Initial Assessment Report is now available.
